ASTM A242

What Is ASTM A242 Steel?

ASTM A242 is a high strength low-allow weathering steel that’s renowned for its exceptional corrosion resistance and higher temperature resistance. This specification covers structural steel shapes, plates, and bars for welded, riveted, or bolted construction intended primarily for use as structural members where savings in weight or added durability are important.

The atmospheric corrosion resistance of A242 is substantially better than that of carbon steels such as A36 and A572-50 with or without copper addition. When properly exposed to the atmosphere, A242 is suitable for many applications in the unpainted condition.

It's worth noting that while ASTM A242 steel offers improved corrosion resistance compared to conventional carbon steel, it is not immune to corrosion. However, its resistance to atmospheric corrosion makes it a popular choice for outdoor applications, as it can provide long-lasting structural integrity with minimal maintenance.

ASTM A588 has a 50ksi minimum yield strength and a 70ksi minimum tensile and can withstand sustained temperatures to 800F.
