ASTM A606-4

What Is ASTM A606-4?

A606-4 is referred to as Corten® or weathering steel. It’s a type of high strength low alloy steel that’s known for its rusted appearance. A606-4 is popular because it can be made into metal roofing and siding panels. It starts out unrusted and will rust with exposure to the weather.

ASTM A606-4 covers steel sheet and coil. It’s a steel alloy that’s made up of copper, chromium, nickel, and other elements that give it corrosion resistance properties. It is also known for its high strength, making it an ideal choice for architectural and structural applications.

Weathering Steel, often referred to as COR-TEN or A606-4/A588, is a group of steel alloys which were developed to phase out the need for painting steel and to guarantee that the steel will form a stable rust-like presence if exposed to the elements for a prolonged period of time. The net effect is that the steel generates a beautiful patina coating which also guards against future corrosion.
